NicoHulkenberg
Formula 1 driver for Audi, car #27. German.

Nico Hulkenberg is a German Formula 1 driver racing for the works Audi Revolut F1 Team in 2026 alongside rookie Gabriel Bortoleto. One of the most experienced drivers on the grid, he is best known for a long, comeback-filled career and for finally taking his maiden F1 podium at the 2025 British Grand Prix after the longest wait for a rostrum in the sport's history. 12
He was born Nicolas Hulkenberg on 19 August 1987 in Emmerich am Rhein, Germany. Fluent in German, Dutch, French and English, he married Lithuanian fashion designer Egle Ruskyte in 2022. 1

Karting and junior formulae
Hulkenberg climbed the ladder with a string of titles: he was German Kart Champion in 2003, won Formula BMW ADAC in 2005, and then dominated the A1 Grand Prix series for Germany in 2006–07 with nine wins, becoming its most successful driver. He took the Formula 3 Euro Series in 2008 with seven victories and the GP2 Series in 2009 as a rookie — only the third driver after Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton to win that title at the first attempt. 1

Formula 1: Williams to Haas
He debuted with Williams in 2010 and, in only his rookie season, took a stunning maiden pole position at the rain-hit Brazilian Grand Prix, beating Sebastian Vettel by over a second and giving Williams its first pole since 2005. He lost the seat for 2011 but rebuilt his career across spells at Force India (a best of fourth at the 2012 Belgian GP), Sauber (2013, fourth in Korea), Renault (2017–2019) and Haas (2023–2024). At Renault in 2018 he finished seventh in the standings as the leading midfield driver, the so-called "champion of the rest." 1

In between full-time drives he served as a respected reserve, making substitute starts for Racing Point in 2020 — including seventh at the 70th Anniversary GP after being called up at short notice — and for Aston Martin in 2022. 1

Haas and the 2024 resurgence
Hulkenberg's full-time return with Haas in 2023–2024 reminded the paddock of his quality. His 2024 season was one of his best for points: he scored 41 points to finish 11th, comfortably outscoring teammate Kevin Magnussen, with back-to-back sixth places at the Austrian and British Grands Prix and further top-ten finishes at Singapore, Austin and Mexico. He was a model of consistency, scoring in all but one of the final seven rounds, and his form that year helped attract Audi's interest as it shaped its 2025 line-up. 16
The records and Le Mans
For years he carried the unwanted records for most F1 starts without a win and most races before a podium. Yet his class was never in doubt: away from F1 he won the 2015 24 Hours of Le Mans with Porsche on his first attempt, sharing the 919 Hybrid with Earl Bamber and Nick Tandy — a result few of his rivals could match. 13

The 2025 British Grand Prix podium
After signing with Sauber for 2025 — the team transitioning into Audi — Hulkenberg produced the defining drive of his career at Silverstone. Starting 19th in chaotic, wet-to-dry conditions, he climbed through the field and held off a charging Lewis Hamilton to claim third place, his first podium after 239 starts, ending the sport's longest wait for a rostrum. The race was won by Lando Norris ahead of Oscar Piastri. He called it "surreal," saying he had been "in denial" until the final pit stop. 24

2025 season and move to Audi
The podium capped Hulkenberg's strongest campaign in years: he finished 11th in the 2025 championship with 51 points, his best haul since 2018, while mentoring rookie teammate Bortoleto, who matched him 15-15 in qualifying. He continues with the squad as it becomes the works Audi team for 2026, providing experienced leadership through the new regulations. The start to 2026 has been frustrating — a non-start in Australia due to a technical issue, then back-to-back 11th places in China and Japan — as Audi works through reliability and race-start problems. 15

Driving style and character
Hulkenberg is regarded as one of the grid's finest qualifiers and a shrewd racer in mixed conditions, as the Silverstone drive underlined; his race engineers have pointed to an instinctive feel for finding lap time when it matters. He has consistently out-qualified strong teammates, from Magnussen at Haas to large stretches of his battle with Bortoleto, and is prized for translating one-lap pace into points on Sundays. Even-tempered, multilingual and pragmatic, he is valued as much for his technical feedback and steadying presence as for raw speed. 256
Bottom line
A long-overlooked talent whose career finally delivered a podium in 2025, Hulkenberg now anchors Audi's works entry as the experienced foil to its young Brazilian prospect, charged with extracting results while the manufacturer builds toward the front. 12
