Ayao Komatsu is a Japanese motorsport engineer and executive, currently Team Principal of the Haas F1 Team. Born 28 January 1976 in Tokyo, he is the rare team boss who rose entirely through the engineering side of the sport, taking the helm of Haas in January 2024 and succeeding the team's first principal, Guenther Steiner. 12
Education
Komatsu set his sights on Formula 1 as a teenager and concluded that the fastest route was to "come to England as soon as possible." Early F1 career
Komatsu entered Formula 1 in 2003 as a tyre engineer at British American Racing in Brackley, staying two seasons in a role that demanded a deep, data-led understanding of how the car interacted with its Michelin and later Bridgestone rubber.
