March 881.
Adrian Newey's first Formula 1 car — a wafer-thin atmo missile that out-thought the turbos and embarrassed a McLaren at Suzuka.
The car that made Adrian Newey
Every great designer has a debut, and the March 881 was Adrian Newey's 1. Before this car he was an aerodynamicist sketching shapes for sportscars and IndyCars; after it he was the most copied man in Formula 1. The 881 was his first grand prix car, and crucially the first he was allowed to design largely his own way, free of a big committee 2. What he produced was less a conventional 1988 racer than a manifesto: make it small, make it light, make the air do the work.
The context made the bet plausible. 1988 was the last year of the first turbo era, a deliberately awkward split formula. Turbo engines were choked to 2.5 bar of boost and just 150 litres of fuel; naturally-aspirated 3.5-litre 'atmo' cars got a 40 kg weight break, down to a 500 kg minimum, and no fuel limit at all 3. The rules were nudging everyone toward the atmo-only 1989. Most teams treated atmo as a stopgap. Newey treated it as a clean sheet.

A wafer-thin wedge
The 881 was tiny — built around the slim frame of lead driver Ivan Capelli, with the smallest frontal area on the grid 4. Newey lifted the nose clear of the ground and undercut it, feeding cleaner air beneath the chassis to the diffuser and generating a vacuum effect that fed front grip and stability. He folded the nose and front wing into a single assembly and sculpted the wing endplates with a care no rival had shown 1. Power came from the new Judd CV V8 — 3.5 litres, 90 degrees, naturally aspirated, around 600 bhp 1. On raw output it was no match for Honda's turbo V6, but bolted to the lightest, slipperiest car in the field it was lethal in a straight line: at Hockenheim the 881 was speed-trapped at 312 km/h (194 mph), the fastest atmo car all season 5.
Punching up at the turbos
The results read like a giant-killing tour. At Spa, after the Benetton-Fords were disqualified, Capelli came home third for his first F1 podium — and March's first since the 1976 Italian Grand Prix 6. At Estoril he went one better, a superb second place that stands as the car's best finish 1. Rookie team-mate Maurício Gugelmin chipped in with a fourth at Silverstone 4. Across the year the team scored 22 points for sixth in the Constructors' Championship — the best-placed Judd-powered team and the only atmo car to lead a race all year (Benetton's Ford-powered cars finished third overall), with Capelli taking 17 of those points and seventh in the drivers' table 3.
Suzuka: the moment that mattered
Then came the moment that lives in the highlight reels. At the Japanese Grand Prix the McLaren-Hondas of Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost were untouchable — they would win 15 of 16 races that year. But on lap 16, with Prost briefly delayed by a spinning backmarker and a missed gear out of the chicane, Capelli's little turquoise March slipped past the McLaren as they crossed the line, into the lead of a Grand Prix 7. It was the only time a non-turbo car led a race in 1988, and the first since 1983 1. Prost's turbo muscle reclaimed the position within a few hundred metres into the first corner, and Capelli retired a few laps later with an electrical fault 7 — but the point had been made, vividly: the most powerful cars on earth had been passed, on merit, by an atmo car.
The blueprint
The 881 wore the bright Leyton House turquoise — 'Miami Blue' — of Akira Akagi's Japanese property group, run by the works March Racing Team under manager Cesare Gariboldi 2. By 1989 most of the grid had copied its raised nose and ultra-slim packaging, and Newey himself carried the philosophy forward into the March CG891 and then to Williams, where the FW14 and a long run of championship cars grew directly from these ideas 1. For a car that never won a race, the March 881's influence is hard to overstate. It is the seed of modern Formula 1 aerodynamics — and the launchpad of its greatest designer.
