Lotus 100T.
Same works Honda turbo as the all-conquering McLaren, a reigning champion aboard — and Lotus's first winless, pole-less year since 1981.
The right engine, the wrong car
In theory the 1988 Lotus 100T had everything. It carried the works Honda RA168E — the very same 1.5-litre V6 twin-turbo that powered McLaren to fifteen wins in sixteen races — and it had a reigning World Champion in the cockpit, Nelson Piquet having jumped ship from Williams over the winter 12. Yet the 100T delivered Team Lotus its first season since 1981 without a single win or pole position 3. It is one of the great cautionary tales of the turbo era: identical horsepower, opposite outcome.
The difference was the chassis. McLaren's MP4/4, shaped by Gordon Murray around an ultra-low reclined driving position and a 'flat fish' profile, was built to exploit every horsepower of the Honda. The 100T, designed by Gérard Ducarouge and Martin Ogilvie, was a bigger, taller, more conventional machine — essentially an update of the 1987 Lotus 99T with a redesigned nose and rear bodywork 14. Where McLaren leapt forward, Lotus largely stood still, and in 1988's development war that meant sliding backwards.

Dropping the active gamble
The most visible technical change was a subtraction. The 99T had pioneered computer-controlled active suspension, fitted at Ayrton Senna's insistence in search of an edge 45. For 1988 Lotus reverted to conventional passive springs and dampers. The logic was defensible: the FIA had slashed turbo boost from 4.0 to 2.5 bar, gutting the Honda of roughly 300 bhp from its 1987 peak, and the team reckoned the active system's ~25 kg of hardware and the ~5% of engine power it consumed were no longer worth carrying 5. The choice was arguably correct — Williams's reactive system that year was a disaster — but it did nothing to address the 100T's deeper flaws 2.
Those flaws ran deep. Development was reportedly compromised by flawed aerodynamic data, and the monocoque was criticised for a lack of rigidity, flexing under load despite its carbon-fibre and Kevlar construction 4. The result was a car that simply lacked ultimate speed.
Piquet's hollow defence
Nelson Piquet's title defence quietly fell apart. His best days came at the bookends and middle of the calendar — third in Brazil, third at San Marino, and third again in the Adelaide finale — but those three podiums were the sum of the highlights 13. He finished sixth in the Drivers' Championship on 22 points, and his season hardened a verdict that would follow him: that Piquet would race flat-out only in a genuinely competitive car 3. The contrast with Senna and Prost, in the identically powered McLaren, was brutal; at Hungary the two Lotuses trailed home seventh and eighth, three laps adrift of the leaders 2.
Satoru Nakajima, Japan's first full-time grand prix driver and a Honda favourite, took the car's only other point with sixth in the opening race in Brazil. The rest of his year was a struggle — 16th in the standings, and the indignity of failing to qualify a works-Honda car at Monaco and Detroit 1.
The slide into decline
Lotus and Arrows ended the constructors' table dead level on 23 points. The countback on best results fell Arrows's way, dropping the once-mighty Team Lotus to fifth 36. For a marque that had taken Senna to pole after pole only a year earlier, fifth with the best engine on the grid was a quietly devastating result — and a marker on the road to the team's eventual decline and 1994 collapse. The 100T was the last Lotus to run the Honda turbo: for 1989 the engine deal ended and Lotus dropped to customer Judd power, never to recover its 1980s stature 13.
The 100T, then, is remembered less for what it did than for what it should have been: proof that in Formula 1 the engine is only ever half the story.
